I just spent a few precious moments with my dog
watching her listening to what little she could hear.
The ears twitched and the nose was working overtime
when the blackbird sitting on the TV aerial over the road
started singing his evening song.
Tomorrow she will be happy to see my daughter
and her painful old life will pick up for a few days,
but soon a decision will have to be made
for me to take her to the vet to put her
out of her misery before long.
It is so hard to know the right time to end the life
of a beloved companion. When there is still
some obvious quality of life, who are we to decide
to bring it to an end? When we can see our companion
still enjoying things it can’t be the right time, can it?
Who am I to say? Or am I wrong?
