APPLE OF YOUR EYE

You said I was the apple of your eye.
You liked apples so I baked you a pie
but in came a swarm of bees flying by.

You ate a slice of pie and choked on it.
Your eyes bulged, your tongue swelled up quite a bit.
You foamed at the mouth as if in a fit.

You were badly stung by a bee, they say.
I have thrown the rest of the pie away.
Was it really my fault you died today?

Andrea Kowch:- Apple of my Eye

**************

THE MATCH

“Can you smell smoke?”
I said to my bloke.
He said “Shush, my dear.
I am here
trying to watch
this football match.”

The encouraging cheers
and rivals’ jeers
became very loud.
The billowing cloud
of acrid smoke
caused us to choke
but no-one else there
seemed to care.

My spellbound bloke
said in a croak
“Our team has never
been beaten this year,
but just you watch
we’ll lose this match.”

“But it’s only a match!”
A match?
Was it a match
caused a fire to catch?

The game drew to an end.
I shouted to my friend
as we stood up higher.
“The school is on fire!
This isn’t a joke.
Couldn’t you smell smoke?”

Mount Hermon Fire

Mount Hermon Fire

Incredibly, the game goes on in spite of the November, 1965 fire at Silliman Hall on the campus of Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts. Deerfield Academy defeated Northfield Mount Hermon 20-14 that day.
